Semen Analysis
Male fertility evaluation begins with a semen analysis, also known as a sperm analysis. A semen analysis is recommended if pregnancy has not been achieved after one year of trying, or earlier if there is a suspected sperm-related issue. It is also advised if the partner is 38 years or older and pregnancy has not occurred after six months of trying.
Anyone can schedule a semen analysis at our clinic; no referral is required. The analysis examines factors such as sperm count and motility, which are used to assess male fertility.
Preparation for a Semen Sample
The semen sample can be provided in a private, comfortable room specifically designated for this purpose. The sample is collected in a container, which is then placed into a small hatch in the collection room, where it is immediately transferred to the laboratory.
A semen sample can also be provided at home. In this case, the clinic provides a collection container, and the sample must be delivered to the clinic within one hour of collection. Sperm cells are highly sensitive to temperature changes, so care must be taken to ensure the sample does not cool down or overheat. For transport, the container can be kept close to body temperature, such as in a shirt pocket.
Before providing the sample, a period of abstinence of 1–3 days is recommended. This abstinence period may influence the test results.
Semen Analysis Results
Semen analysis results are generally reliable. The sample reflects the current condition, but results can vary between different sample collections. Certain factors, such as medications, testicular injuries, smoking, or infections (e.g., a recent high fever), can affect the quality of the semen sample. These factors are recorded on a pre-test questionnaire at the time of sample collection. If necessary, a follow-up sample may be analyzed to confirm the findings.
Following the semen analysis, further steps are determined based on the overall situation.
